We had to re-locate to Ottawa, including dog and 95 year mother-in-law for 5 months. Then we had a pleasant drive back to Brighton to pick up Sadie from Mrs. Phillips, Pat’s 95 year old mother, and then home. They’ve mostly been performed in younger patients because of the harmful effects, or toxicities, to the body that come with the full-dose conditioning chemotherapy that’s needed before the transplant itself. They must have struggled with huge fears, seeing their dad in such a desperate state, which sometimes was difficult to witness. 2 and 1/2 weeks away from the two year anniversary of my bone marrow transplant.

As one of my dear friends said, “Some people not only had cancer, but now cancer has them.”  I believe it is important to leave the cancer behind and move on with the rest of life once one has achieved remission.

I believe in science and in the technology of this treatment.

Then off to the cafeteria for a quick lunch and then to Module L for our meeting with the Bone Marrow Team. It was very nice to see them and Anne went to great trouble to prepare food that I could eat, soft and juicy, as my dry mouth can make a lot of foods inedible. I was blessed to have prayers being offered on my behalf from around the world and had loving support from my family, friends and church family. In other words, the only real distinction between a bone marrow transplant and a stem cell transplant in the method of collecting the stem cells. You bet!

Reducing medication costs is useful information for everyone, particularly for cancer and transplant patients. Consider the alternative to deliberately developing a positive attitude: all you have left is misery, pain, and self-pity.

Unfortunately, I had to stop working in order to protect my growing immune system, and haven’t been back to work in over two years. It would be somewhat invasive in normal times, having to insure that you did this every Monday at 2 pm, but in these times it gives us something to do. Sadly, not all people who experience one or more post-treatment side effects seek the help they need to determine if they can reclaim the intimate aspects of their lives. In religion class she told the story of the first bone marrow procedure and how a stranger saved a young girl’s life. And once you embrace that and find your own shoulder to lean on, then I challenge you to turn and face cancer square on and no matter what this illness robs from you, you decide what it will never steal. With the love of my family and friends, I am making it through my journey. I hope so. Tara has many suitable donors on the registry to choose from. I underwent the first double umbilical cord transplant performed at the Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital – two baby cords from unknown donors. I didn’t mind at all. I stopped telling people why I was going to the hospital; half, to make sure I didn’t jinx the transplant and half, to avoid the inevitable but unspoken exchange when they thought I was crazy for doing it. “EMBRACING THE SUCK” required me to accept the unexpected, analyze it, “deal with it” and continue on.

Since then I’ve been living with extensive GVHD (Graft Verses Host Disease). The only reason I finally went to the hospital was because I tripped over my cat. Since 1998, doctors have used a drug called hydroxyurea to reduce symptoms, but it can cause serious side effects and increase the risk of certain cancers.

I remember that I used to cry so hard during the car rides back and forth to the hospital. Until then my life had been great. They are amazing and wonderful human beings. One nurse practitioner would come into my room at 3:00 a.m. to check my vitals.
