The Upper Loop is a shorter loop; if beginning at the northern end of the Greenway, the Upper Loop is about 1.5 miles, one way. As the area was heavily mined, the creeks and streams contain mine run-off; best to carry your water with you. It is named for the 110′ waterfall on Little Falling Water Creek that drops over the resistant sandstone cap of the Cumberland Plateau. Follow Roberts Mill Road to the top of the mountain, and veer right onto Hixson Springs Road. About 10 miles of the Cumberland Trail run through North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Natural Area.
Pass through a pine grove.
Amazing trail, but if you want to prevent frustration from the bugs and overgrowth, I would recommend waiting until late fall. A lot of the Trails are overgrown and some washed out by the creek. Just past the ladders is an overlook with incredible views of North Chickamauga Creek Gorge.
Proceed for 1.5 miles. Mile 0.1 (4.8) Cross the first of many coal seams.
Mile 0.6 (4.3) Note the rock house on the left. The first 2 miles were pretty good. If you hike this trail, plan for 50 miles from Little Soddy trailhead to Rock Creek trailhead. Beautiful views in some areas, water was nice and cool to put our buffs in to cool us off.
The Greenway reaches its southern terminus at the currently closed South Entrance, just upstream from the Chickamauga Dam construction site. Couple waterfalls and bluff views. Highlights include spectacular views of the valley from the escarpment, boulders and rock formations, and at the northern end, a historic walk through the remnants of one the oldest tunnel coal-mining operations in Tennessee. overgrowth hides some very skinny trail points where if your not paying attention you'll step where there is no ground at all.
The trail then follows the base of the bluff, going past old coal mines and over piles of coal overburden, providing fascinating views of rock formations and even rock fossils.
After about 1.2 miles, the Short Loop intersects the Long Loop.
An overlook just past Panther Branch provides additional views of the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge. This diversity of forestland near a large urban area gives the area even greater significance. The trail traces a large bend in North Chickamauga Creek. The vertical cliffs of the escarpment with its rugged, steep, rocky slopes appear in stark contrast to Falling Water Falls Gorge. 1 mile in the trail gets a little squirrelly...tough to find the marked trail...but after that very well marked and taken care of. Beyond the campsite, the trail crosses Cooper Creek, then begins a long, steady climb.

It then branches off and is marked with a double blue blaze. The trail continues to wind through upland forest before intersecting Clear Branch. The trail itself was well maintained.
Uses: Foot traffic and bicycling. My goal was to get to Stevenson Campground, but unfortunately I called it quits when the trail started to wind back down into the gorge towards the river.
From Chattanooga take US 27 north to the TN 319 Hixson Pike exit.
A steep drop and another ladder take the trail all the way down to the creek, where it stays until it reaches Stevenson Branch Campsite. Rhododendron, honeysuckle, and spice shrubs abound here in the spring. Pike for 0.7 miles, then turn left onto Montlake Road. The South Entrance is currently closed. Also, this section had large patches of poison ivy right on the edge of the trail. This trail will become part of a coordinated regional system that will eventually connect the Sammamish River Burke-Gillman Trail in King County with the Snohomish County Regional Interurban Trail … •

The trail was well-kept and easy to follow. The climbs got my quads burning. No rewarding views. After about 1 mile, turn right onto Dayton Pike. Camping is permitted at Stevenson Branch Campsite, which is approximately 4.5 miles from the Montlake Road Trailhead or about 2.7 miles from the Barker Camp Trailhead. Approximately midway between the Mowbray Pike and Sluder Lane trailheads, the bench provides an excellent spot to sit back and take a rest. we were essentially bushwhacking with a slight trail to follow. trail was easy to follow but kind of rocky in places. Soon after, reach a junction with historic area loop trail (blazed yellow) to the right that circles back to connect with the CT to the north. The hiker will then encounter converted mining roads that make for easy walking; coal mining dominated this area at one time. Mile 4.1 (3.1) Stevenson Branch Campsite Stevenson Branch Campsite is the only authorized campsite in North Chickamauga Gorge. Mile 0.5 (4.4) Pass through “Little Stone Door,” a gap through some very large boulders and descend to the base of the bluff line. The trail meanders through a boulder field.
There are two loops available on the main Greenway trail.
It was not particularly remote - it ran along a river with lots of big groups playing music (Saturday) and houses on the ridge. Mile 0.2 (4.7) Cross a small seasonal stream. Blaze: White.
I don't think this trail gets a whole lot of traffic, because it was very overgrown up on the ridge, an abundance of bugs, I lost the trail numerous times and had to backtrack more times than I wanted to.
It was pretty rough. If you are at an office or shared network, you can ask the network administrator to run a scan across the network looking for misconfigured or infected devices.
Follow the gravel road to the top, where there is a locked gate. The views were gorgeous, and once you start climbing, there aren't a lot of people, so you can really commune with nature. This tract of land is in the flood plain, so parts of the trail are flooded during wet times of the year.
Nice hike! Restrooms are available across from the dog park and in the Greenway Farm house. The North Creek Regional Trail will be located between SR 524 and 183rd St SE, west of Bothell-Everett Highway. Took a long snack and swim break at Big Soddy Creek. The trail then fords Cooper Creek just upstream of its confluence with North Chickamauga Creek and then climbs out of Cooper Creek Gorge. The entirety of the trail is dirt singletrack, and it goes through some of the oldest forest in the North Chickamauga Creek watershed. It is located on North Chickamauga Creek between the confluence of Cooper Creek and the confluence of Stevenson Branch. Stay on Dayton

You can take a left at the creek crossing to go to the Blue Hole. Mile 1.7 (3.2) Enter a pine grove; to the right is a small overlook, and in late spring the abundant blueberry bushes offer the hiker a tasty snack to those fortunate enough to beat the birds to them. This stretch includes the Little Soddy Historic Mining Area (BROCHURE). This portion of the Cumberland Trail though was TOUGH. So many trails .
Slippery after a spring rain. The loop consists mostly of gradual elevation changes with intermittent moderately steep sections. At this intersection, the hiker enters the Little Soddy Historic Mining Area—a Walk in History (see also Mining History Synopsis). Take the Thrasher Pike exit, and turn left onto Thrasher Pike. Falling Water Falls supports a great diversity of plant and animal life including a small population of the federally endangered large-flowered skullcap (Scutellaria montana). Cross a wooden bridge over Little Soddy Creek and begin a rocky and steep (but mercifully short) climb out of the Little Soddy Gorge. Length: Approximately 1 mile After a spring rain, the natural low of the trail can be a bit wet.
