From this trailhead to the top of Lookout Mountain it is 1.2 miles and 860 feet of elevation gain. done this trail a few times, its very rocky but should be easy enough for most kids, there are a few inclines, but a decent walk. Go left again. OR-126 becomes NW 3rd St/US-26 E. Continue on US-26 E for about 13 miles. The trail meanders up through open mountain meadows and thick old growth ponderosa pine stands to the summit of Lookout Mountain. The trail goes in and out of forest, through the meadows with large amounts of nicely sculpted - but poisonous - false hellebore plant. In late May and early June, you'll see a lot of wildflowers - blue larkspurs, red paintbrush, and yellow balsamroot-like Wyethia (aka Mule's Ear). I consider this a little easier than moderate.

Back on the main trail, you will come to another junction in less than 1/3 of a mile, in the middle of a large sagebrush meadow. Looking back, you'll see a glimpse of Big Summit Prairie through the trees to the east. This trail goes for 1 3/4 miles through marshy meadows and old growth ponderosa pine stands until it reaches the junction for Line Butte Tie Trail #807A. In the bottom of big gully, you will cross Brush Creek - the only reliable water source on this loop. adventures and follow local regulations.

In the next half mile the trail comes to what looks like big, long-forgotten gravel parking lot overgrowing with grass - go across it and a good trail will resume on the other side. The trail next dips into old growth ponderosa pine forest with occasional views of the Cascades. It is possible to hike up and around this mine, which is well worth the detour. Next mile and half after Brush Creek is mostly open terrain, dry rocky meadows with impressive variety of flowers. This moderate hike takes you to the highest point in Minnesota, at all of 2,301 ft in elevation. The trailhead is on the right with a small parking area. The Lookout Mountain Trail System Crisscrossing Lookout Mountain are more than thirty miles worth of trails that allow hikers to explore much the park on the mountain. There are good places to camp under the trees around the shelter (and of course, the shelter itself - but expect some company) but if you camp, you'll need to bring water with you. Stay on Forest Service Road 42 for 7 miles.

Just go get a drink at the restaurant and walk the quarter mile down the road back to your parking spot.

If you want to go to the peak and back you can do that without taking any loops, you can make your hike as long or as short as you would like. You, however, are going to snap a few pictures of the falls and continue on up the trail. Go straight on double-track, and in about 100 yards it splits - keep right and soon it will turn into single-track again (there's no signs but a couple of rock cairns will mark the way). Past here, the going is straightforward - just ignore a few small trails to your left. It's more sunny and drier there than in the Cascades - just watch for thunderstorm forecast. Thank goodness I have the AllTrail app or would have taken multiple wrong turns. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 4220 for 5 miles. However, other flowers last well into July, so there's always something to see. On a clear day, the summit offers views from Mt.
