Obviously I still have a mad amount of respect for her, but I’m just glad it worked out the way it did. Unique and interesting. London, 1872.

As the violence closes in around her Leo must find the links between the Black Glove’s attacks, Tom’s criminal past, the doctor’s dangerous cure, and Thornfax’s political ambitions. It was well-written, fast-paced, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story and its characters. But I’m not going to do that, so it was pretty near flawless for me.

In most historical romances, love and marriage go together like...well, a horse and carriage. 2-2.5 interrobangs = It was okay, I guess, but some things made me mad/annoyed/bored. Leo was insecure and sensitive, but was also smart and able to think for herself (practically unheard of in Victorian times!). The villagers mimic the screams, while Dani appears to breakdown from what is happening again. Friendly, forthright, and as a bonus devastatingly handsome, Thornfax seems immune to the gossip about Leo’s “madness.” But their courtship is endangered from the start. The comparisons to Austen, Doyle, Sepetys, and Wein seem a little all over the place but this summary sounds like a fantastic gothic historical fiction.

The last half of the book was a bit slow and I found nyself skipping paragraphs. About Sarah Henstra. -the ending. -the writing (and overall plot) was compelling and drew me in. The street urchins Dr. Dewhurst treats are dying of overdose. Mad Miss Mimic is reminiscent of a Jane Austen novel with prose that is so descriptive the reader almost believes s/he is experiencing the plot as well. OH, and Christa! The King of Keji: Book Launch (Wolfville), Susan Juby and Susin Nielsen: Book Launches, Mad Miss Mimic: Q & A with author Sarah Henstra. When the handsome and wealthy Francis Thornfax—business partner of Leo’s brother-in-law Dr. Dewhurst—appears in her life, Leo thinks her problems will be solved, until she learns of Mr. Thornfax’s shady business dealings. She teaches courses on Gothic horror stories and fairy tales and I’m like two seconds away from trying to take one of her classes because I’m fascinated by both those things! What fun this book was to read! And of course I liked Tom Rampling (with a name like Tom Rampling, how could you not like him?). I was initially excited about the heroine, who has a speech impediment and can perfectly mimic others' voices.

I do like this time period. I have to admit this was on my TBR purely for title and cover reasons.

I read it in a single sitting. During a time when it was expected that young women would marry at a young age there are some difficulties between Leo and her sister. She grew up on the wild, wet coast of British Columbia, but now she lives in Toronto, Ontario with her two sons. Servants and ladies alike call her "Mad Miss Mimic" behind her back... and watch as she unintentionally scares off every potential suitor. She’s strikingly beautiful and going to be very rich, but Leo has a problem money can’t solve. But what if the girl part of the girl-meets-boy... Refresh and try again. But then she went the more traditional/predictable route, and I still almost cried but this time out of happiness! Mad Miss Mimic gets 4/5 stars!

--Quill and Quire"This is the perfect beach read for that teen who got an A in History (and would rather stay inside watching Downton Abbey than go to the beach in the first place)." But I am deeefinitely intrigued by it now that I see Elizabeth Wein comparisons. I was a little worried that she was going to go in one direction and, even though I would have respected her for it, I would have cried.

Servants and ladies alike call her “Mad Miss Mimic” behind her back…and watch as Leo unintentionally scares off one potential husband after another.

Meanwhile, while trying to cope with her stuttering her sister Christabel is set on procuring a wealthy husband to take off her hands so long as Leonora doesn't scare them off. ), Toronto Public Library An excellent debut novel! 0143187082 (pbk. London, 1872. From the outset of the novel, it’s revealed through speech and action that Leonora suffers from a lack of confidence due to her stutter, and chooses not to speak much at public gatherings; however, for this same reason, her male suitors find her mysterious and alluring. Entirely. I’ll definitely be looking for more of Sarah Henstra’s books in the future ☺️ While one might immediately shelve this in the romance section—especially upon reading about the existence of a second male suitor, Tom Rampling—I feel this can also be described as a coming-of-age novel.

The narration was un-dynamic (which isn't an official adjective, I know, but accurate nonetheless), the plot was unexciting (also highly predictable), & the characters were flatter than cardboard. I had a love-hate relationship with Leo’s sister where I both felt sorry for her but also wanted to smack her. Throughout the novel, many characters seek to silence Leonora: “Who would ever believe talk of conspiracy and murder coming from the lips of Mad Miss Mimic?” Thornfax asks her, while he’s got her tied up in a shipping warehouse.

Mad Miss Mimic. This was my second book by Sarah Henstra. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. by Penguin Canada. Mad Miss Mimic is written in the first person, from Leonora’s perspective, and I was both in awe and jealous of the ease with which Henstra seemed to enter the mind of a nineteenth-century upper-class English girl.
