When she asks her son if he burnt all his paintings in the backyard the night after an argument he politely deflects by saying he didn't because it would have ruined the neighbours' washing. Turner in Mr Turner, Spall turns his hand to portraying another British artist, L.S. The story is mostly set in their two-up-two-down home, where Mrs Lowry is bedridden; and explores a co-dependant relationship in which Mrs Lowry berates her meek son for his pursuit of painting. Lowry became one of the most famous and beloved British artists. Because the film is so reluctant to take any formal risks, it cushions itself with needless amounts of nagging music as a safety net, and winds up giving us a dainty little tour of the Lowry museum in Salford, where we can presumably expect the DVD to be sold until kingdom come. Only fleetingly do Noble (a veteran Royal Shakespeare Company director with two direct stage-to-film transfers to his name) and his capable crew attempt any on-screen evocation of Lowry’s art, rather a waste considering how cinematically it engaged with urban landscapes and populations. Mrs Lowry & Son started life as a BBC radio play by Martyn Hesford (who adapts here), but sadly Adrian Noble’s film has little ambition to transcend its talk-y traditional roots.
