The Second Vatican Council called the family “the first and vital cell of society” (Apostolicam Actuositatem 11). Yet for all that, and even if we have been trained not to take note of it, our families give us life. that the family, as a domestic sanctuary of the Church, should not only offer prayers to God in common but also, according to circumstances, should recite parts of the Liturgy of the Hours in order to be more intimately linked with the Church. It is difficult to stay the course in living the Christian life in a world that is so divorced from the simplicity of the Holy Family, but it is not impossible. We were amazed.

A silent interior life is free of struggles and distraction; it is a life of constancy, whereas the noise of the world is disruptive and distracting.

Family is where progress in the Christian life, the way of ordinary holiness, can find its raw material. The Holy Family is a family that knew hardship yet remained steadfast in God.

Not only do these rich, family traditions and customs remind us of the beautiful nature of our families, the reality that Our God decided to enter human history in the midst of family—indeed as part of a family—demonstrates for us just how very important the family is.

If parents expose their children to stories about the lives of the saints and give them opportunities to experience the beauty of their faith, these formational moments will be deeply etched on their memories. Joseph was called to accept the fact that his wife was pregnant. Do not lament how far your family is from the one that we call “holy.” Concentrate on what so many of us share with them: poverty, lack of opportunity, a need to relocate just to survive. They still make us who we are.

Our own family, then, can become the sanctuary we seek in the rush and bustle of our daily lives. Think of the Martins, St. Therese of Lisieux’s family, who also suffered the loss of their mother but went on to lead lives of sanctity. We contemplate today the human warmth of the Holy Family, the love of Mary and Joseph for each other and for their son, as well as Jesus’ love for his parents. But lessons about hard work and discipline can be learned when parents make the effort to allow their children to help them in their daily tasks at home.
