He was still able to visit Greece, however, using a Danish diplomatic passport.

Some argue too, that the last Roman emperor was Francis II in 1806. This referendum confirmed the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of Greece as a democracy.

The last person to hold the title of emperor of the western Roman Empire in antiquity and actually have de facto power in the capital city of Ravenna was Romulus Augustus (often known derisively by the diminutive “Romulus Augustulus”). The Ottoman sultans were recognized as the legitimate rulers of the Roman Empire by the Greek Orthodox Church and by the inhabitants of the former Byzantine Empire. I don’t subscribe to this theory, but it is great for debate ! who has neurological troubles.

The exact timing of the Roman Empire is a subject of considerable debate.

Alexios V Doukas seized power through a coup on 5 February 1204 and reigned until his death during the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders on 12 April 1204. Who has the best claim as the Roman Emperor?

It’s important to remember, though, that when the Western Roman Empire fall, the Eastern Roman Empire did not.

After the fall of Romulus, there would never be a ruling Western Roman Emperor again. Nepos would finally be overthrown by Orestes, a Roman general of Germanic origin. The real last Western Roman Emperor, and the one more commonly known, is Romulus Augustus; known to history as ‘Romulus Augustulus’ (Little Augustus) due to the fact that he became Emperor at the age of 12.

Up until half a century ago, the modern nation-state of Greece was ruled by kings.

He was deposed by the Germanic king Odoacer on 4 September 476 AD. By 1461, Trebizond was in a similar state to the Byzantine Empire: weak and surrounded by the Ottomans. The reason lies mainly with whether or not they feel the Byzantine Empire was, by then, still a ‘Roman Empire’. One of the many titles of the emperors of the Roman Empire was Pontifex Maximus.

ABOVE: Gold trimessis with a portrait of Julius Nepos in profile. He remained the de jure king of Greece for several years, despite living in exile in Britain with little power in his home country. The Eastern Roman court at Constantinople would continue to recognize Nepos as the legitimate Western Roman Emperor. Talking about these two would make for a great follow up topic though. This continues to be disputed. After his appointment, Julius Nepos would then sail to Italy from Damaltia and Glycerius would surrender the throne immediately. I am currently a student at Indiana University Bloomington pursuing a double major in classical studies and history. With these losses, the Roman Empire effectively lost its ability to legitimately claim that it ruled the Mediterranean. He also shut down the Neoplatonic Akademia in Athens, which had been being run by Neoplatonic philosophers who openly practiced the old religion. It was also during Herakleios’s reign that the Byzantines lost control of Egypt and many of their territories in Asia to the Rashidun Caliphate. The Holy Roman Empire was supposed to be a revival of the western Roman Empire.

The walls were finally breached by Sultan Mehmed’s army and Constantine disappeared from history after throwing himself into the last stand of fighting. He managed to restore the Provence region of Gaul to the Empire, but despite his diplomatic successes, Nepos was not a popular Emperor. But it still had an Emperor: Constantine XI. The problem we run into here is that, while the Holy Roman Empire claimed to be a restoration of the western Roman Empire, it was not particularly Roman in any real respect.

I would not consider the Pope a “Roman emperor” myself in any real sense. ABOVE: Roman marble head of Diocletian, crowned with laurels. Note: Theodosius I was the last person to rule both halves of the Roman …

Therefore, one could make a serious argument that Theodosius I was the last true Roman emperor. Thank you so much!

But even after Constantine died, there were still people who could claim to be a Roman Emperor. But there are people who would not consider Constantine as a real last Roman Emperor.

Wow! ( Log Out /  But it has to be told the right way. To them, it just seemed like business-as-usual; dividing the Empire between two rulers seemed like a traditional way of running things.

The real last Western Roman Emperor, and the one more commonly known, is Romulus Augustus; known to history as ‘Romulus Augustulus’ (Little Augustus) due to the fact that he became Emperor at the age of 12. The last emperor of the western portion of the Roman Empire who was accepted by the emperor of the eastern portion of the Roman Empire as a legitimate ruler was the emperor Julius Nepos, who ruled as de facto and de jure emperor of the western Roman Empire from June 474 AD until 28 August 475 AD, when he was deposed by Orestes and forced to flee from the Roman capital of Ravenna to Dalmatia. But Constantine was hardly an Emperor.

We’re not interested in writing a scholarly paper for university. The Ottoman Empire never ruled the city of Rome in any capacity at any point in its entire history.

I wasn’t aware of this. On 21 April 1967, a group of right-wing mid-ranking military officers initiated a coup d’état, which overthrew the government, but which left the king nominally still in power.

Sultan Mehmed also decided to take down this Christian outpost. Great article.

The Roman Senate, for example, disliked him because Nepos was too close to the Eastern court.

These Neoplatonic philosophers were eventually allowed to return to the Byzantine Empire to practice their religion unmolested as a result of a peace treaty between Khosrow I and Justinian I in around 533 AD. The Empire was never again united under a single ruler. For a thousand years, the formidable defenses of Constantinople protected it from enemies, allowing a continued flourishing of the Byzantine Empire from the times of Constantine up to then. The west no longer required an emperor of its own; one monarch sufficed for the world.
It all comes down to your own opinion, really, on who you’d view as the last Roman Emperor.

After Herakleios’s reign, the Roman Empire never regained control of the territories that were lost, which remained under the rule of various Islamic empires for over a millennium thereafter. The last emperor of the eastern Roman Empire to rule before the siege and sack of Constantinople by the participants of the Fourth Crusade was Alexios V Doukas, who ruled for only a few months in 1204.
No one really agrees on who has the best claim to the title of “last emperor of the Roman Empire.” For what it is worth, I personally do not think that that title really accurately describes anyone.
