How The Program Works. Typically, the public considers body donation an altruistic act that makes body parts, organs, and tissue available for research and development of bio-products and new devices.


However, it is always advised to confirm the details of any program you are considering. The only way to be certain that a body would direct first to our program would be to remove the living organ donor identification and registry from your record with the DMV. Upon acceptance, the next of kin or authorized representative will be asked to sign a release form that provides direction regarding the disposition of remains.

Since 1967, the Willed Body Program at The University of Arizona, College of Medicine, Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine, has remained committed to honoring the wishes of our donors to further the education of future and current health professionals through the gift of body donation. For an individual to become a donor, blood and oxygen must flow through the organ until the time it is recovered. Will my family be able to find out more about my particular illness or specific genetic condition(s) if I am a donor in your program?

At the conclusion of the study, there is no cost to the family for cremation or for the return of the cremains. Please keep in mind that the condition of the body at the time of death may render it ineligible for whole body donation.
