Patients were randomized to receive intense immunosuppression (mobilization with cyclophosphamide and filgrastim, conditioning with carmustine, cytosine-arabinoside, etoposide, melphalan, and anti-thymocyte globulin) followed by AHSCT or MTX 20 mg every month for 6 months. Secondary endpoints were the cumulative number of Gd+ lesions, relapse rate, and disability progression. More recent studies in aHSCT indicate that the therapy might be more successful if done in the earlier inflammatory stages of MS. There was significant improvement in the EDSS for the majority of patients, which was the primary objective of the study, and 80% of the participants achieved disease-free survival at two years after treatment.  |  Paediatr Drugs.
