His elder son Edward succeeded him and became second duke of York. He was also keeper of the realm in 1396 during the king's brief visit to France to collect his child-bride Isabella of Valois. Things changed somewhat when Henry V ascended the throne in 1413. While he was there, York was overthrown by the King and, in retaliation, Yorkist forces were sent to engage those of Tudor's in South Wales.

The boys had an uncle- helpfully also called Edmund- who felt that young Edmund had a better claim to the throne than Henry.

In the play, Edmund resigns his position as an adviser to his nephew Richard II, but is reluctant to betray the king. But a succession through females could not reasonably have been objected to after Edward III's claim to the crown of France; and, apart from strict legality, the duke's claim was probably supported in the popular estimation by the fact that he was descended from Edward III through his father no less than through his mother. He married Anne Stafford, the daughter of the Duke of Buckingham and appears to have done so without asking Henry V’s permission because he was fined a huge amount of money for doing so.
