Drawing from his own experience growing up in the U.K. and Nigeria, Yinka Shonibare investigates political and social histories related to post-colonialism and globalization, reconfiguring iconic imagery from the Western art-historical canon with a playful and ironic touch. A hallmark of his art is the brightly coloured Dutch wax fabric he uses. Yinka Shonibare (b.1962) Royal Academy of Arts Born in London in 1962, Shonibare moved to Lagos, Nigeria with his family at the age of three. Shonibare was elected as a Royal Academician by the Royal Academy, London in 2013. He had two Victorian style dresses in the personal collection of Charles Saatchi in 1997.
