Its puppetry, stop motion and lighting effects are all kinds of wonderful and spooky. The post-watch reactions to Return to Oz were also no doubt fascinating, especially given how starkly different it feels from The Wizard. I had never heard about Return to Oz until I came across an old Siskel and Ebert review on You Tube, where they trashed the movie saying it was way to scary for children. L. Frank Baum's first foray into the world of Oz already had, even though it is a classic novel for children, some dark undertones in that it dealt with themes such as death, overcoming evil and dealing with the treacherousness of the adult world.
