A late Italian Renaissance painter best known for her portraiture, Sofonisba Anguissola was one of the first known female artists to establish an international reputation. Her most famous work is Judith slaying Holofernes, a scene of horrific struggle and blood-letting. Painted in great detail and in vibrant colors, her still lifes were mainly composed of fruits and flowers peaking into the light from the darkness. Spanning 21 feet feet, the vibrantly colored painting includes carefully rendered details including wine chalices, salt cellars, wood panelling, and a rhythmically creased tablecloth. [9] The Pentecost, in Perugia’s Basilica of San Domenico, is another of her most significant works, as well as her Annunciation and St. Catherine of Siena both preserved at the Uffizi. Influenced by the work of Fra Bartolomeo, and overcoming her artistic handicap, Nelli discerned on her own the intricate secrets of the human form, which she employed to great success in her paintings.

She was known to paint beautifully and very quickly, attracting many visitors to her studio who enjoyed watching her work.
